About Lesson
The proofreader should see to it that:
- The dateline, volume and number, and folio are correct and in their proper positions.
- The stories carry their proper headlines.
- The cuts are straight, properly placed, and correctly captioned.
- The lines of types and column rules are straight.
- The headlines are typographically correct and well-written.
- “Continued” lines and jump heads are properly placed.
- Erratic compositions like transposed or inverted letters and loose types are set right.
- Depth of pages and margins are checked.
- Poor leading (pronounced leding) or spacing between lines are avoided.
- Stray bold or light face lines have not crept in.
- Long stories, usually more than three-inch deep, have subheads.
- All killed materials have been deleted.
Ethically and professionally speaking, a proofreader should bear in mind that proofreading is no time for copyreading. This is one grave reason why many school papers do not come out on time.
